Matt Stuart, co-owner and co-founder of Rooted Gardens, recently participated in a classroom exercise at Hartford High School that emulated the popular "Shark Tank" format. Matt was invited by Mr. Douglas Anton, an economics teacher, to visit the class and provide feedback on business plans developed by his students. These businesses are then funded by the school with real money. Matt was able to share his insights from his own journey starting a small business and provide mentorship for the young entrepreneurs.

Matt shared his unique perspective as a local small business owner.

Matt described the experience, saying, “I was able to offer immediate verbal feedback during their pitches, followed by written comments for them to review. It was a great way to engage with young minds and help them refine their business concepts.” Matt noted that “the students were incredibly enthusiastic. Mr. Anton wanted them to gain exposure to a real-life business owner with a unique and somewhat disruptive business model, and they truly appreciated that.”

The range of business ideas presented by the students was truly inspiring. “Some students pitched projects that involved selling energy drinks and snacks in the school hallways, while others developed unique products with potential appeal beyond just the school. There were also service industry ideas that I could envision evolving into successful local businesses.”

Reflecting on the overall experience, Matt noted “It was a valuable

experience for everyone involved, and I truly enjoyed engaging with teenagers who were inspired to bring their ideas to life. I have a feeling that one or two of them might even go on to start their own businesses or potentially join Rooted Gardens in the future.”
